2022 SWELL ARTWORK – Salvage/Selvage, Brigid Vidler
A reef of faded denim coral covers 3 empty oil drums, scattered on the sand. Denim is one of the most recognisable fabrics in the world, from utilitarian workwear to items of fashion. Fading and ripping reveal snippets of the life of the person who wore the denim. Similarly, traces of human activity can be seen on coral reefs in the form of physical damage, pollution and now almost annual coral bleaching events. The coral has been hand sewn using old pairs of salvaged jeans.
