About Richard Scott
Richard Scott, 39, is an emerging artist from Palm Beach on the Gold Coast. Heavily influenced by 1950’s style illustration, promotional “matchbox” design and classical Gold Coast signage and shopfronts, Richard has been working on a series of hand-painted “fake ads” for iconic local businesses, including Putt-Putt (Mermaid Beach), Condom Kingdom, and Hollywood Showgirls (Surfers Paradise). An artist-in-residence at Mint Art House (Burleigh Heads) earlier in the year, Richard’s debut show – Glitter and Gold – opened in May, 2022.

With its giant, smiley golf ball greeting locals and tourists alike for more than 50 years, Putt-Putt Mermaid Beach is one of the Gold Coast’s best-loved attractions. This big cheeky ball (on the old highway) has since become a Gold Coast icon and landmark in its own right, proudly standing tall in our manically ever-changing “knock-down-and-rebuild” city. This sculpture will invite visitors to celebrate our local history: on the one hand, happy to still be standing; on the other, heartbroken over all that has been lost.
