ABOUT
Born in 1969 Joe Stark’s artistic journey has taken twists and turns like the flight of a bumblebee trying to navigate through a tropical cyclone. For the past six years Stark has resided in Australia’s most isolated town Nhulunbuy, far north east Arnhem land NT.
Being an avid recycler Stark’s sculptures up until 2019 consisted of stainless steel, steel and hardwood scavenged and scrounged from around far north coast NSW. Since drifting to the NT Stark has been creating sculptures out of the panels of abandoned vehicle carcasses which are in great abundance around the dirt tracks of this Mad Max kind of place to exist.
Entering numerous outdoor sculpture shows and many gallery exhibitions across Australia and New Zealand, Stark has won awards and commendations. Works have been installed in public spaces, Universities, schools and have gone to private collections in all Australian states and many overseas countries.

Man and dog from the north country
In the work “Man and dog from the north country”, Stark looks into the connections/bonds formed between the partnership. Being immersed in a seemingly hostile environment Stark has observed many Yolngu and Balanda men with their hunting dogs throughout the wilderness of Arnhem land working together looking out for each other all while catching a feed.
