What was the inspiration behind the piece that is a part of the SWELL Sculpture Festival 2021?
Past critiques and fears for the future.
Do you follow a process or plan for each new piece or do you ‘wing it’?
I’m a Gemini so both.
Would you describe your artistic journey as a slow burn or a wild ride?
Again I’d say as a Gemini both have been a fair description at different times.
Can you tell us a little bit more about how you became the artist that you are today?
The last twelve years have seen me prioritise being a father. A little gut shot in England in 2008 also helped. And I won SWELL twice, 2007 and 2014.
Describe your ideal environment where your creative juices flow?
I believe in creating a life I don’t need to take holidays from. COVID has simplified that somewhat, my juices flow at home.
Is there an artist or body of work that you would consider your muse?
I have misquoted a lot of artists but would not consider any as my muse.
If you had to choose 3 words to describe your artistic style, what would they be?
Meaningless, ideological, satire.
Beyond SWELL 2021, is there a forthcoming project you are most excited about?
My youngest starting school, I might even do social media again, maybe. SWELL 2022 I already plan on ripping on some ABC kids show.
What does exhibiting in SWELL 2021 mean to you?
It’s good therapy and I always appreciate the opportunity.
Is there anything you do to continue developing as an artist? Would you describe yourself as self-taught or formally educated in your artistic practice?
Engage more as an artist when I can be less present as a parent, I am both self educated. Damn Gemini.
Where did you grow up?
Bunjalung country.
Have you got a favourite Art Gallery in Australia?
Lorraine Pilgrim Gallery.
Tea or coffee?
Both but usually coffee if pushed.
