MEET CAM CROSSLEY
What was the inspiration behind your piece for SWELL Sculpture Festival 2022?
It is the nature of threads to tangle. This is a great analogy for our relationships in a way. Some threads make a cosy jumper. Some threads just make a tangled mess. So it’s about love.
What does exhibiting in the 20th year of SWELL Sculpture Festival mean to you?
The beach was a great part of my life growing up, and it’s always been a great inspiration to me in my art. I love the way people are different at the beach. It’s the great democratiser. Most uniforms are gone. There’s just us, the ocean, the sun and each other. I’m delighted to show a piece of my work in that environment with like minded creatives. Thank you so much SWELL.
What are the three art mediums you couldn’t live without?
Clay, bronze and fire.
What is the best piece of advice that you’ve ever received?
Get to work.
If you could wake up tomorrow in the body of another artist, who would you pick and what would you do?
Picasso. Get to work.
What is the best compliment for an artist to receive?
Anything that avoids the use of the word ‘nice’.
Do you believe in ghosts or have any good unexplainable stories?
No.
If you had to get a tattoo of a famous artwork, what would it be?
‘Draped Seated Woman’ by Henry Moore.
Do you believe pineapple belongs on a pizza?
Rarely, but there’s plenty of better things to put on a pizza.
Do you have a power outfit that you wear while creating?
A good welding mask and gloves (without a cape).
If you could travel back to any point in time, when and where would you go and why?
Last Thursday morning and redo my lotto entry.
Is a connection to place important for you and your work?
Yes always, but not as important as people and to special ones mostly.
