FINN COSSAR SCOTT

What was the inspiration behind your piece for SWELL Sculpture Festival 2022?

I was welding one day and a little native bee flew into my shed and started packing mud into some old metal, so I thought let’s create a huge bee hive out of metal, they obviously love it.

What does exhibiting in the 20th year of SWELL Sculpture Festival mean to you?

It is such an amazing opportunity and a privilege to exhibit along side such great artists.

Do you have a party trick or impressive icebreaker talent?

I can make a drink disappear pretty’s quick.

Does music impact your art? What kind of music do you create to?

Whilst I was welding the 5000 hex nuts together for the bee hive it was a little repetitive so I listened to some loud music like Sneaky Sound System and some Spider Bait.

If you type Finn Cossar into Spotify and look for a playlist called zippy zappy there is some of my motivational welding songs.

What is your favourite snack when working on big projects?

COFFEE!

What is the most important lesson you’ve ever learnt from a mentor?

Let the artwork speak for itself.

Is there a running theme with what you create?

I love to make artworks that have an important message or have a form of balance or tension.

If you could immediately learn any skill, which would you choose?

Aluminium welding 😂

Does pop culture and modern media impact your work?

Absolutely. A lot of my work is environmentally based to voice the urgency of climate change.

Pop culture has encouraged me to incorporate technology like lighting and sound into my sculptures.

Do you have a favourite quote or mantra that you live by?

The chances of finding out what’s really going on in the universe are so remote, the only thing to do is hang the sense of it and keep yourself occupied.

-Douglas Adams

Which work of art that you have experienced has been the most influential to your practice?

Stelarcs Third Arm Bionic sculpture was a huge eye opening thing to learn about. The integration of biotechnology to create this working third arm inspired me to create art that really stood out.

Now that travel is becoming an option again, where is your next adventure destination?

I loved Thailand and the beautiful culture there is amazing, I think me and my beautiful partner would love to travel there.
