MEET ANTHONY SAWREY
What was the inspiration behind your piece for SWELL Sculpture Festival 2022?
I don’t really get inspired by anything. My work tends to develop in response to a location, that can include its dimensions, relation to other objects, features nearby, or even it’s history. In this particular instance, I wanted to do an installation that was secure for passing pedestrians. I wanted to create a safe place. I hope it works as I intended.
What does exhibiting in the 20th year of SWELL Sculpture Festival mean to you?
No too much. I’ll get back to you on that…
If you had to remove one colour from existence, which colour would you choose? Why?
I would choose not to choose. The removal of any colour from the world of the real would diminish all remaining colours, tints and tones. In fact my first question to any authority that compelled me to do this would be: Why?
What is your favourite meal to cook when trying to impress someone?
Tinned spaghetti. With good truck-stop style white toast.
You’ve been transported into a fictional world of your choosing. Which book, movie, or TV show would it be?
The Thing. 1983 body horror classic.
What do you wish you knew about being an artist before you started creating?
Nothing at all. There was never a before.
What tools would you use to manage creative burnout?
One nine inch grinder, a decent air compressor and a TE300i.
How would your friends describe you?
They don’t engage with me on that level.
What is your favourite part of the creative process?
The finish.
Where do you do most of your creating? Is it from a backyard, a studio, or a kitchen bench, or other?
A nice healthy lawn.
What is the strangest food combo that you love?
Sardines on toast.
What is your favourite Karaoke song? Do you have a music genre that always inspires you?
Such a millennial question. Sorry, most of the songs I like are not on Spotify. Think Neil Young for starters. Genres? Nah. Karaoke? Enrico Caruso: La Donna è Mobile
