MATHIEU VENON

Mathieu Venon’s art is instinctive and deeply sensitive, weaving together fragments of his inner worlds. Anchored in New Caledonia for over 25 years, he has developed a unique style; a poetic, fragmented reality with abstract contours. His work is powerfully imprinted with Oceanian graphic codes, creating a distinct and evocative visual language.
Black Birds
This work was ultimately born from a happy coincidence, the meeting of fire and wood. After having made the decision and above all having a desire for something else artistically, I began to burn some of my unfinished works on painted wooden panels and observe what happened. I finally rediscovered a material there and especially graphite black, carbonised shapes.
Can you describe your creative process from concept to completion?
The creative process for Black Birds was inspired by global fires, particularly in Australia in 2019. I therefore chose wood and fire to best express the extinction of animal species.
Where do you look for inspiration? What themes do you find most interesting?
Essentially in nature, also in life, current events, books.
What role does location or environment play in your sculptures?
I pay attention to a lot themes and problems of today’s world.
How do you feel when you see people interacting with your sculptures?
I really like integrating my work into a defined environment, I particularly like the contrast of black birds on the white sand in a striking place with a natural power of this coastline.
Describe your dream project.
Certainly a project that would raise public awareness of a major environmental cause.
