Warrren Pickering
Warren Pickering’s artistic background started with a technical drawing career in architecture. The introduction of CAD into the workplace led Warren to move into the practical side of the building trade for a more hands on approach.
While world travels for six years inspired his place of residence to shift from London to Adelaide and a desire to follow a more free-form approach to his arts practice. Working closely with his wife, artist Anna Small he was inspired with the desire to experiment with metal. The challenge was to couple the free-form style of the pencil drawings with the structural and design aspects of his background. Using a handheld plasma cutter he is able to re-create these drawings and bring them to life in a three dimensional format and produce work that is both engineered and organic, represented by the physical hand-forming aspect and the movement within the piece respectively.
The sculpture’s silhouette, reminiscent of a breaching whale, pays homage to the oceans, a reminder of the delicate balance between human industry and marine ecosystems hoping to highlight an appreciation for the boundless potential of regeneration.
Come and see for yourself at SWELL Sculpture Festival, Pacific Parade, Currumbin 12th – 21st September.
