Thomas Pall

Thomas Pall is an emerging artist operating out of Goondiwindi in SW Qld. His passion for his family and environs, combined with contemporary fabrication processes of boilermaking and traditional blacksmithing techniques, underpin his creative urge to deconstruct familiar, new, and reclaimed objects, in unfamiliar ways to express unfamiliar ideas. The seed was planted for him to forge his own way as a sculptor when he designed and engineered his first steel form, an emu reconstructed from agricultural tynes. Further, quirky, hybrid, steel forms emerged expanding his practice and profile. Subsequent exhibitions, awards, and commissions followed providing opportunities for him to expand his experience and expertise as a sculptor working predominantly in steel.

Recorded. Fed into the algorithm. Manipulated.
Absorbing and consuming quietly and patiently.
There is no rush. We go to it willingly.
The machine gorges itself on humanity.
The machine grows stronger.
It is calm.
It knows what it is. Who you are.
Do not be fooled.
Please, DON’T FEED THE MACHINE
What sparked the idea for the work you are exhibiting at SWELL this year?
Dont Feed The Machine had been rattling around inside my head for quite some time. Partly inspired by the music of Rage Against The Machine, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan and System Of A Down. Books like Ishmael by Daniel Quinn and the works of Dr Seuss. And partly by just wandering around planet earth.
What keeps you coming back to sculpture as a form of expression?
Sculpture for me has always been about the process and the material. The steel. It’s ability to be shaped and worked and re-worked. re-used and re-purposed. It’s efficiency and durability. The process of building something. Creating something.
