THE ARTIST TREBOR (AKA ROB STEPHENSON)

Life is an ongoing exploration of things.
The Artist Trebor (Rob) grew up in a small rural community 15 minutes out of Wellington, New Zealand.
As a boy he would draw on anything and everything. Walls. Doors. Windows… even paper sometimes.
After his high school art teacher recognised Trebor’s talents, he studied for 3 years full-time at Wellington Polytechnic, graduating in 1984.
From there Trebor pursued a career in Art Direction, working in some of the world’s big-name multinational ad agencies in Wellington, Sydney and Brisbane, creating many award-winning campaigns. He’s been a Senior Art Director and Associate Creative Director with many of those agencies.
He has been running his own Design Consultancy, The AD Man – Rob Stephenson, for the past 20+ years. Trebor is a truly creative thinker with design skills across all media and draws inspiration from everywhere. He creates witty, satirical and thought-provoking sculptures and artworks.
Interestingly, WORDS is an anagram of SWORD.
First coined in 500 BC, the saying “The word is mightier than the sword” was reinterpreted in 1839 AD as “The pen is mightier than the sword” Regardless of its origins, history demonstrates that the written word is far more effective than violence when it comes to resolving conflict. Literary texts have the power to influence, change, or reinforce our perceptions of the world.
However, it’s important to remember that not everything written is true. Ironically, this can lead to both camaraderie and conflict.
Whether with a pen or a sword, one person can change another’s life indefinitely with a single stroke.
Come and see for yourself at SWELL Sculpture Festival, Pacific Parade, Currumbin 12th – 21st September.
