2020 ARTIST BIOS | LANA SCOVILLE

/ / Artist Bios 2020

Echoing the vast beauty and vulnerability of our natural environment, Lana Scoville is a multi-disciplinary artist working predominantly on bespoke and sustainable outdoor sculpture and installation art. She explores the natural world in all its beauty and grandeur but also its complexity and fragility, subtly highlighting the environmental challenges we face today.

Lana’s early beginnings of growing up between the Great Barrier Reef and the tropical rain forests of far north Queensland, provided her with a deep connection and affinity with nature which has greatly influenced her creative vision. Whilst studying a bachelor of Fine arts at RMIT Lana founded Within_space, a small, passionate team who design and build sculptural installations, stages and interactive spaces throughout Australia.
Their work is repetitive and a labour some, a challenging but meditative process full of love and deep appreciation for the land. The process consists of gathering, sorting and installing materials which is predominantly salvaged fallen wood collected from the local area, a minimal impact, meticulous process resulting in awe-striking large scale and site specific works of art, bridging ethical and environmental concerns.

Using sustainable, salvaged and recycled materials, Lana along with her crew from Within space together create monumental- scaled sculptures and installations which utilize natures waste in unique and reflective ways. Her pieces evoke a deep sense of symbiosis and interconnectedness with the natural world, exploring the interconnectedness of all living things.
