Village Bike was established in 2013 with a vision to create a City wide grass roots recycled bike focus for the Gold Coast that engages with the community and reinforces a the culture of recreational cycling, recycling and a community conversation.
This scheme combines the recycling of thrown out materials, the engagement, training and mentorship of youth, the social engagement and skills sharing of a men’s shed and the promotion of active and healthy transport alternatives. This combination of elements is undertaken at a grass roots level to promote a sense of community as a not for profit organisation but with an aim of becoming City wide.
2021 SWELL ARTWORK – LOOK Bike, Village Bike
Our work started with repairing bikes, till we started using bikes as a medium. They represent a material, and a form with both a mechanical and aesthetic dimensions. We like to deconstruct and reconstruct, repurposing the mechanics to create kinetic responses. Our development of wind generated movement is simple, yet it continues to get more enthusiastic as we go. LOOK Bike is a reminder on road safety, to be aware of riders on the road. The rider will pump legs and arms; head will move with eyes that flash red, giving you a look to remind you to look.
