2022 SWELL ARTWORK – Immortal, Alice Nixom
I’ve called this stylised sea urchin sculpture “Immortal”, drawing on the recently discovered fact that some urchins can live up to 200 years. Using the human-sized scale of the sculpture, I wanted to emphasise the connection between humanity and biodiversity, and the desire to see ordinary objects as something unique. I aim to capture the urchin’s unique lantern shape and the marine animal’s intriguing patterning. Using the cement medium helps replicate the circles and texture that are an essential tactile quality of the urchin’s shell.
