About Ben Carpenter & John Walker
Ben Carpenter is a New Zealand-born artist that is looking into the future. His goal is to change people’s perception of what lighting can be through innovative methods and out-of-the-box thinking. His background in lighting and signage shows through in his artwork, where he is able to achieve spectacular lighting effects combined with thoughtful elements
John Walker has been walking this world for many years. Inquisitive, curious and finding inspiration in the ordinary. A compulsive imaginist with inventive tendencies which he captures in his artwork, poetry and repurposing of objects.
The machinations of the universe brought them to collaborate on their piece, the ‘Sands of Time’.
2023 SWELL ARTWORK – Sands of Time
The Sands of Time represents a coming of age for the Gold Coast. With the city planning into the future, it is important to look back at time passed and honour those that came before us. The equilateral triangle is the strongest geometrical shape, and the points of the triangle represent the land, the culture and the people of our city. While the lighting incorporated in the sculpture gives a contrast between day and night, absence and abundance and finally, past and present.
