About Guanqi Zhu
Guanqi is an innovative designer and a PhD candidate who is committed to combining traditional design methods with computational technologies. His research focuses on utilizing bio-inspired morphology and natural materials to develop new forms, and he is keen to explore the potential of digital technologies to enable even more creative possibilities in design. His research interests span a range of topics, including digital design, interactive installations, material computation, and robotic construction.
2023 SWELL ARTWORK – BioBotics
Imitating the fractal shape of tree branches can not only increase its span and reduce the weight of the structure but also conform to the strange and beautiful characteristics of the fractal aesthetic principle. So, this artwork combines the concepts of biology morphology and fibrous material and realizes it using a robotic fabrication process. Furthermore, this process is achieved by the spatial weaving of the FRP fabric driven by a robotic arm and the fast-cure resin is applied to the fiber fabric and cured during the weaving process.
