About Suvira McDonald

Over several decades Suvira has developed a visual vocabulary across a variety of media and subject areas; mostly landscape and environment related though often characterised as quirky. He combines his interest in materials, including ‘found objects’, and any other interesting piece of debris, with his productions of ceramic, metals and wood, in his outcomes.

Suvira produces, curates and advocates for sculpture and public art. He initiated the Mullumbimby Sculpture Walk in 2015 and acted as curator of Sculpture at Byron Writers Fest 2016 – 2022.

He holds an MA in Visual Art from SCU Lismore. His early art career focused on many aspects of theatre and dance performance.

2023 SWELL ARTWORK – Ode To A Windy Day

With ‘Ode to a Windy Day’, McDonald has employed wind-generated kinesis to produce a quirky & poetic reference to renewable energy; however, it’s a propeller without the turbine mechanism. It also swivels like a vane.

‘Ode to a Windy Day’ is largely the result of a surprising combination of collected pieces and the completion of unfinished works assembled somewhat spontaneously. The artist works in an intuitive field of imagination eventually realising projects commenced sometimes years before. Assemblage Funk.
