AlICIA LANE
Alicia Lane is a Brisbane-based interdisciplinary artist specialising in metal-smithing and ceramics. Her work delves into the intricate relationships between humans and nature, exploring our interactions and shared histories with plants and animals. Alicia regularly exhibits her work and has been featured in various exhibitions and awards. She participated in the Swell Sculpture Festival in 2016 and won the City of Gold Coast Art Prize for her piece ‘Rainforest Remnants.’ In 2024, Alicia completed her Doctorate of Visual Art from the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University.
‘Keep the Change’ consists of a series of oversized coins, modelled in earthenware ceramics with gold and silver metallic glazes. The designs on the coins are intended to resemble Australian coins featuring native animals, but in this case, they represent animals from Moreton Bay/Quandamooka that have been impacted or are threatened by human activities. Most of these changes are driven, in some way, by the human pursuit of money. While fortunes are made and lost, the damage done, ultimately in the form of species extinction, is permanent.
Can you describe your creative process from concept to completion?
First, I dream up something I’d like to own or see. Next is the challenge of bringing my idea to life. This is where you become fully absorbed in the moment and is the most enjoyable part. Eventually, the time arrives when you must make the hard decision to let your fledgling fly. Then, the next idea emerges, and the process is repeated.
Where do you look for inspiration? What themes do you find most interesting?
My fascination often begins with observing the unique forms of hardy Australian plants. I love the abstract sculptural shapes these plants possess. I’m especially attracted to how our harsh Australian sunlight creates bold shadows and patterns and how these forms constantly move and change across surfaces.”
