COLLEEN LAVENDER
Colleen Lavender’s journey through the sculptural world has been diverse, spanning from large public works in Beaudesert to commissions for collectors across Queensland, including exhibitions internationally and throughout Australia. Her approach to her medium is unconventional, resulting in a dynamic interplay of positive and negative spaces, delivering impactful and distinctive artworks. Combining the plasma cutter and welder, Colleen creates a unique fusion of character and eccentricity in her pieces. Her 2023 SWELL sculpture, a striking squadron of manta rays symbolising community, earned her the SWELL Sculpture Indigenous Art Award.
Breaking chains transforming pain
The old truck serves as both a narrative and a metaphor, shedding light on violence against women. Finding a new purpose tells the story of reclamation and fortitude. Through evocative symbolism, the delicacy of the lace patterns serves as a counterpoint to the strict control of the binding chains. May this artwork, rooted in the resilience of survivors, be a catalyst for change and foster a community that rejects silence and embraces healing.
