DION PARKER
Dion Parker is a multi-award-winning sculptor known for his playful, humorous, and slightly cheeky creations. Much of his work features character-based sculptures, with his most beloved character being ‘Lil Dusty,’ who is celebrating his 10th birthday this year, equating to 70 dog years. Dion’s art brings joy and whimsy to audiences, highlighting his unique talent for creating enduring and delightful characters.
Eons ago, when the world was still young, there existed just two types of living creatures. One was a huge, lumbering, powerful yet peaceful beast that would, over Millenia, evolve into humans. The second was the earliest form of canine. In pairs they roamed the earth. Exploring newly formed mountains and rivers, forests and coastlines. They spent their nights watching the stars move across the sky and listened as the earth groaned and rumbled through its infancy. One afternoon, while the canine was napping, the powerful beast carefully rearranged a pile of rocks with the same amount of ease as we would move pebbles. A small gesture of adoration, that pile of rocks formed what many consider to be the first sculpture ever created.
Can you describe your creative process from concept to completion?
It various depending on the work. Usually something in see, feel or hear sparks an idea in my head. Sometimes the idea for a completed work just pops into my head and I figure out what it means along the way.Sometimes I’ll draw diagrams or make a maquette first, sometimes I’ll just get straight into it.Then it’s a matter of following the steps i think are necessary.
Where do you look for inspiration? What themes do you find most interesting?
i don’t really seek inspiration, but i find my best ideas come from my subconscious then somehow find a way into my conscious thoughts.Human feelings and emotions.
What role does location or environment play in your sculptures?
It’s always a factor. Sometimes more than others.
How do you feel when you see people interacting with your sculptures?
I love seeing that. Especially when they don’t know I made it. You get to see all sorts of very honest reactions and opinions.
Describe your dream project.
