GARY FENLON
Gary Fenlon is a sculptor specialising in marble and a painter working primarily with oils. He regularly exhibits his work with Sculptors Queensland and the Royal Queensland Art Society.
Can you describe your creative process from concept to completion?
I select subjects of an organic nature and study their anatomy/ morphology. I try to be innovative in the presentation of the subject and at the same time, take my stone sculpting craft to a higher skill level. Once I am comfortable with a subject, I like to move to an abstraction of that subject with another piece.
Where do you look for inspiration? What themes do you find most interesting?
Nature has all of the geometry imaginable and there are no straight lines.
What role does location or environment play in your sculptures?
The sculpture comes first and how to present in a particular environment follows.
How do you feel when you see people interacting with your sculptures?
The creative process can be very isolated, so watching people interact with a piece is a closing of the circle.
Describe your dream project.
A monumental scale figurative piece in marble.
