INDIA COLLINS
India Collins is a contemporary artist based in Cairns, Australia. Born and raised in Canada, Collins completed her fine arts studies in Montreal. Much of Collins’s work is centred around narratives that are intrinsically connected to the materials being used, harnessing histories, and reinterpreting and transforming materials into new contemporary, social contexts. Her work is process-driven and consequently evolutionary in nature and speaks to notions of transformation both in the physical and philosophical form. Her work in many ways is a visceral and poetic exposition of human vulnerability.Through the fabrication of immersive and sensory environments which incorporate texture, lighting, movement and sound, India addresses her audience through an active viewing experience which is a catalyst for re-engaging people in new and unexpected ways. Collins weaves in the sculptural form using recycled materials, always sourcing materials locally and ethically in order to minimise the environmental impact of her creative practice.
