Southern Sand Star – Luidia Australiae
Kahli enjoys sharing her experiences through art and sculptures. Her aim is to remind her audience of our sometimes forgotten flora and fauna by always linking her pieces to the natural world. This piece represents a species of starfish endemic to Australia and New Zealand that Kahli once saw while walking along the shoreline in South-East Queensland.
Can you describe your creative process from concept to completion?
The idea started; Walking along the beach at sunset on a spring afternoon with my feet in the seawater. The week before this we had thunderstorms so the swell in the water was strong! All of a sudden I see the biggest starfish looking animal emerge spinning from the white wash. In that moment, I imagined capturing this moment for everyone to see. So once later identified as a Southern Sand Star – Luidia Australiae, I quickly drew up the animal on paper and pondered on the memory of it spinning.Next was deciding what medium to use for recreating a Southern sand star. Clay for the curvy but solid body. Then mirror mosaic square tiles for the glimmering exterior of the starfish. Finally recycled bicycle mechanisms were used to bring these pieces to life.
Where do you look for inspiration? What themes do you find most interesting?
I find inspiration in the natural world, particularly in the flora and fauna endemic to Australia. Natural wonders remind me of the importance of our biodiversity and ecosystems. The themes of conservation and sustainability resonate deeply with me because they highlight how interconnected we are with our environment. Understanding and appreciating Australia’s rich biodiversity. Creating awareness on the essential role that the natural environment plays in shaping our lives and fostering a sustainable future for generations to come.
What role does location or environment play in your sculptures?
The role of location and environment is integral to my sculptures, especially when they are showcased in a unique open-air gallery on the beach. The natural surroundings—whether it’s the sound of crashing waves, the feel of sand underfoot, or the ever-changing light—become a dynamic part of the artwork itself. They interact with each sculpture, creating a story between nature and art that enhances view and experience. This environment not only complements my sculptures aesthetically but also imbues them with a sense of serenity and connection to the natural world.
How do you feel when you see people interacting with your sculptures?
Genuinely, I feel fulfilled and that I have a purpose. Even more so, I simply feel inspired to emerse myself in our natural environment and create more sculptures from those special moments. It’s invigorating to be apart of such an iconic event for the Gold Coast!
Describe your dream project.
Every project is my dream project. As long as it aligns with the purpose of educating my audience of our amazing Flora and Fauna we have in Australia. Leaving a social comment on our environment and how it’s the small things, that may be over looked in our everyday lives, that matter the most.
