KANNITA LY
Kannitha Ly is a multidisciplinary artist. She has completed degrees in Fine Art (Distinction) (QCA) and Architectural Design. Her work spans across sculpture, installation art, printmaking and ceramics. Ly often leans on the sensibility of materials, allowing it to impart its inherent nature and history to her work. This contributes to her exploration in themes relating to suburbia, society and the environment. Ly has previously exhibited works in Queensland, New South Wales and New York.
Undercurrent
On the linear track of the streets, walls of mundane expectations enclose a population of dreamers. One by one, they endeavor to climb the ladder to the peak of homogeneity. Yet, falling short of conformist bliss, they are caught in the sporadic gusts of the undercurrent. They revel in the desire to be set free, to flow along their own tide.
Where do you look for inspiration? What themes do you find most interesting?
Inspiration can come from several sources, such as visual triggers, reading, past or present events. I find themes that are problematic, reactionary or thought provoking are generally the most appealing to me.
What role does location or environment play in your sculptures?
The location and the environment play a large role in my sculptures, particularly site-specific work. Consideration of how the sculpture will fit and operate within the landscape, as well as its potential to withstand the elements are required. Some factors include weather conditions, the effects of salt, sand and corrosion, anchoring points, and public interaction and safety.
How do you feel when you see people interacting with your sculptures?
It is rewarding to see people interact with my work as it shows that the work is doing its job in engaging with people. Their response to the work is intriguing to watch as it can either be an anticipated reaction or it can take you by surprise.
Describe your dream project.
There are a few dream projects, but one would be a public art installation which incorporates the physical space within the artwork, creating a holistic approach and outcome of the work.
