KATIE BARBARIE STEWART

Katie Stewart is an emerging artist, from the far North Coast of NSW. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School in 2019, Sydney, majoring in Sculpture and Painting. In 2019, she was recognised at the Sculpture by the Sea art trail for her work ‘Spilt Imprint’, sponsored by Keane Ceramics. The following year, she received the Macquarie Bank emerging Artist award for her ‘Fisherman’ series. Since then, Stewart has collaborated on numerous projects including Leeroy New’s piece for 2022 Sydney Biennale. She was also project manager for a site-specific work entitled ‘Weave’ for the Living School located in Byron Bay in Collaboration with Sydney based art and architecture collective Cave Urban. Her metal forging practice has served her to be exhibited in the 2023 site-specific sculpture trail in Manly, Sydney entitled Les Sculptures Refusées.
Print Imprint
At the core of Stewart’s practice is a multidisciplinary approach to creation and collaboration. Her work expresses a quest for symbiosis between process, materials, and site by investigating structures in both the natural and built environments. Stewart reveals impressions found in nature to explore the possibilities of neutral space, a process best characterised as ‘impression’ installation. She seeks to expose the negative space created by imprints made from erosion, movement, or force. Her work focuses on observing how we impart ourselves onto the landscape, as there is always a trace left behind.
