PARTHENOPI
parthenopi has branched out from her career as an events florist to take on the challenge of creating sculpture in a different medium. She has drawn from her knowledge of making large sculptural floral installations for special events and used that to work with discarded materials; bringing everyday household and industrial waste to life. parthenopi relishes in experimenting with striking texture and dynamic form and injecting a sense of fun into her work to delight audiences while also inviting them to contemplate a deeper environmental message.
In Greek mythology, Iris is a messenger goddess who travels between heaven and earth. This sculpture offers a reflective moment in a tumultuous world and a hope that its eponymous messenger goddess brings news of peace. The sculpture is further inspired by the lavishly ruffled white bearded Iris flower.
Where do you look for inspiration? What themes do you find most interesting?
I always look to nature for inspiration, especially to the beautiful blooms I work with as a florist. I’m inspired by the unique forms and array of colours and am constantly surprised by how they compliment each other. Every flower has its own personality, whether it be bold or delicate, and I try to convey this in my art.
What role does location or environment play in your sculptures?
A key element of my practice is assembling my sculpture in situ and being inspired by my surroundings; altering the artwork to compliment the landscape and create a conversation between the two. I feel so lucky to be able to showcase my work on Currumbin beach… the sculpture would look completely different in a gallery space.
How do you feel when you see people interacting with your sculptures?
My favourite part of SWELL is getting to observe people interacting and enjoying the sculptures. I especially love seeing younger audiences getting involved. I really enjoyed making flowers out of recycled plastics during my interactive project last year. It’s such a great reason to take people away from their everyday routine and out to enjoy a memorable day of art on the beach.
