REUBEN MERGARD
Reuben Mergard, born 1997 in Brisbane Australia, lives and works in South East Queensland. Reuben Mergard is an emerging multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, drawing, painting, assemblage and photography, examining the role of Man, the Made and the Land inhabited by both. He explores themes of creation, discovery, adventure, reality and the surreal. Often working with everyday construction materials, Mergard’s distinctive approach often juxtaposes the made with the natural. Unexpected geometric forms in idyllic natural settings result in dreamlike compositions. His visual style is informed largely by his upbringing: raised in a family of designers, and by his career: as a graphic and logo designer.
Icosapod, Octapod, Tetrapod
Constructed from 96 uniform trapezoid panels, Tetrapod, Octopod, and Icosapod are modular structures inspired by three of the five Platonic solids: the Tetrahedron, Octahedron, and Icosahedron. Reminiscent of seedpods or sea urchins, these “pods” appear to be making their way across the beach. Are they moving toward the ocean, or are they venturing out of it, from sea to land?
