RUssell lance Solomon
Russell Solomon, was born into an artistic family most notably his Grandfather, Lance Solomon, a renowned landscape painter. Under his tutelage Russell honed his drawing skills. After a life of drawing on paper, Russell discovered wire as a three dimensional line and created his first series of sculptures from wire in 1989. Wire as a sculptural form of drawing in three dimensions offered a new level of tangibility and engagement to Solomon’s art. Russell says his art practice is greatly influenced by his love of Australian native flora and fauna, the environment in which we live and our impact on it. The past thirty four years Solomon has exhibited widely, conducted community workshops for all ages and skill levels throughout Australia. His output has been described as prolific. His sculptures have won multiple awards and are in private and corporate collections worldwide.
‘Percy’s Perspective’ is an interactive sculpture that invites viewers to consider the role perspective plays in all our interactions and experiences. For Percy, the fish in the water below are a necessity, a food source. For Nemo, Percy flying above the water is a looming monster that just ate their beloved Aunty Wanda yesterday. As viewers, we are offered a unique perspective, one where we see both participants and have the capacity to understand both viewpoints.
Can you describe your creative process from concept to completion?
Most of my ideas come from an emotional initiative. A social consideration that resonates with me.For example, throughout my life from childhood I inocently albeit a little naively considered fences, gates, and later, borders visas and passports a restriction of our freedom.Years before lockdowns began, I was working on ideas to express my feelings. When our Borders were closed hard, it was the right time and place to make a statement! My partner & collabor tossed around a few ideas, designs till we both stopped, turned to each other and in unison “Yes” that was only the beginnings of problem solving that went on until installation of “Delimitation” 2021 SSF.
Describe your dream project.
Ideally it would be collaborative. Interactive all encompassing sculptures that promote conversation and communication.
