In Hot Water
The shape and form of a sea urchin test is a thing of beauty, and an example of nature’s perfect geometry. However, as part of a cascade of the effects of global warming, it can also become a symbol of ecosystems out of balance. As average winter temperatures steadily rise in the waters off Southern Australia, an explosion in the population of sea urchins is occurring. This is resulting in the disappearance of giant kelp forests as the urchins voraciously munch their way across the sea bed, creating “barrens”. This work is a reflection on the beauty of nature, but through the use of reclaimed copper hot water heaters, a parallel is drawn to the warming of oceans triggered by human activity, and the often surprising and unusual ways that these changes can manifest.
