DerbyCross

DerbyCross is the creative collaboration of Dan Draper and Evita Camilleri, a husband-and-wife team, whose work spans painting, sculpture, bonsai, public art, and wearable art. Based on the Sunshine Coast of Australia, they have been working together since 2015, drawing on their shared passion for creating tactile, visually captivating works that utilise simplicity to create complexity. Self-taught artists, DerbyCross’s practice is defined by the repetitive use of just a few core materials—usually two or three—which they manipulate in innovative ways to craft art that is both technically refined and aesthetically striking. No matter the scale, their work is driven by a desire to explore form, texture, and the beauty found in the unexpected relationships between everyday materials.
Life Tower
Life Tower transforms an unused surf lifesaving tower into a whimsical, living sculpture. Drawing inspiration from nature’s process of reclamation, the artists have used simple materials of cut tubing and cable ties to create intricate layers that evoke the organic growth of coral encrusting submerged objects. The result is a complex, captivating structure that mirrors nature’s ability to repurpose man-made forms. The tower, now overtaken by its transformation, invites viewers to reflect on the cycles of growth, decay, and renewal in both natural and human-made worlds.
