SWELL 2025 ARTWORK
BIG
A sculptural tribute to members past and present, of the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) and its enduring spirit of community and resourcefulness.
The artistic process draws on Peters rich timber heritage, hailing from a family of champion axemen and inspired by Peters’ Great-Grandmother & first QCWA president Annie Tilney. The piece features two colossal knitting needles hand-crafted from a salvaged 25-metre ironbark tree, symbolising strength and adaptability.
Adorning the needles is the beginnings of a giant’s scarf, knitted by Denise and accompanied by a massive ball of wool. Made from over three kilometres of retired fishing rope and mooring lines.
The sculpture celebrates the strength that emerges when individuals come together, linking past and present in a shared legacy of resourcefulness and community.
