Jeanette Stok

Jeanette Stok modifies traditional embroidery techniques for use with alternative materials. She received her BFA from Queensland College of Art (2016) and her work has been selected for the Tamworth Textile Triennial (2018). She has also won the CrossXPollinatioN Art Prize in Colac, Victoria, a three-dimensional textile prize (2019). Last year her artwork “Margy’s dress” was a finalist in the World of WearableArt competition in Wellington, New Zealand.
What’s something people might not realise about the process behind your work?
Most people think that these works have been 3d printed or call the process weaving. This technique is actually called embroidery, and I have modified it a little to make it work with gutter guard.
Is there a moment or memory that shaped you as an artist?
I have strong memories of interacting with art (in many forms) as a child. I still can feel that sense of awe while being transfixed by an artwork. My mother use to make us lie on the floor of the NGV in Melbourne and look up at the Leonard French stain glass ceiling. It’s worth the time.
If you could install your work anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Gallery of NSW – The Tank Gallery. That gallery is amazing. It is a massive space, with a very visible origin that would be fun to work with.
