What was the inspiration behind your piece for SWELL Sculpture Festival 2023?

The inspiration behind this piece of artwork is the concept of exploring the extent to which material can be reused, as reflected in its title “The Last Dance.”

Where were you born, where are you living now, and how does where you live affect your art?

Living in Goulburn after being born in Malaysia significantly influences my art. My work embodies the concept of contrasting experiences, as I navigate creating art in a different cultural setting. This interplay of environments and cultures shapes the essence of my artistic expression.

If you are having a ‘cuppa’ is it tea or coffee?

Tea

Where do you find inspiration?

My inspiration for artwork stems from a blend of conceptual messages I wish to express and the hands-on experience of working with materials, discovering their potential.

What is your favourite meal to cook when trying to impress someone?

A grilled balsamic-glazed salmon served with a vibrant medley of roasted vegetables like bell peppers, asparagus, and cherry tomatoes. The combination of flavours and colours on the plate makes it a delightful and memorable dish.

If you weren’t an artist, what would your profession be?

If not an artist, I’d seek a creative profession, perhaps design, where I can express my artistic vision.

What is your easy-to-watch movie?

My favourite easy-to-watch movies are Chinese films set in fantasy worlds with old-time settings. I find great enjoyment in the magical elements and historical contexts portrayed in these films.

If you could have lunch with any artist from any era, who would it be?

I’d love to lunch with Dale Chihuly, the renowned American glass artist known for his innovative work with glass. His expertise and insights would be truly inspiring!

What does it mean to you to be a featured artist in SWELL Sculpture Festival?

Being a featured artist in the SWELL Sculpture Festival holds great significance for me. The artistic journey is full of challenges, and being recognised through this selection is truly rewarding and affirming. It provides a sense of validation and inspires me to continue pushing the boundaries of my art.

If you could choose any, what superpower would you want?

Given the chance to possess a superpower, I’d love to have the ability to tidy up the mess from my studio instantly with a simple snap of my fingers. This way, I could fully immerse myself in the creative process without any concerns about the aftermath.

What was your favourite moment of 2023 so far?

My favourite moment of the year 2023 was being chosen as a featured artist for a magazine, including the honour of being on the front cover. The photo shoot at my studio was so much fun, working with a talented team that included a photographer, stylist, and curator. It was a fulfilling and exciting experience that elevated my artistic journey.

What advice do you have for emerging artists?

My advice for emerging artists is to work hard and stay true to yourself. Dedication and perseverance are key in the artistic journey, and staying authentic to your vision will lead to meaningful and impactful creations. Remember to trust your artistic instincts and keep honing your craft with passion and determination.
