MEET ALICE NIXON
What was the inspiration behind your piece for SWELL Sculpture Festival 2022?
I’ve had this idea for several years; I stopped procrastinating and produced this handcrafted tactile sculpture inspired by the sea.
What does exhibiting in the 20th year of SWELL Sculpture Festival mean to you?
I’ve always loved the artwork in this festival so I’m excited to be a part of it on this occasion.
You went to grab your favourite mug, but have found a Genie living inside of it – what are your three wishes?
1. Another 5 wishes.
2. The ability to fly.
3. Owning an invisibility cape.
What might people be surprised to learn about you?
I grew up in regional Victoria on a farm.
Do you think coriander tastes like soap?
No, I love coriander.
What is your favourite song to get the party started?
Happy – Pharrell Williams
I Heard it Through the Grapevine – Marvin Gaye
Superstition – Stevie Wonder
Old Town Road – Billy Ray
What is your favourite thing to do after completing a major project?
Have a large Margherita cocktail and go back to the other sculptures I’m still working on.
What are some important lessons you’ve learnt from your art career?
Patience, let things dry between coats.
Always do a test run and follow your own interests.
What excites you about the future of art?
I’m interested in how new technology will change this space.
What is your favourite ‘dad joke’?
Q: What do you call a fly without wings?
A: A walk
What would we find you doing when you’re not making art?
Thinking about making art.
Where were you born, where are you living now, and how does where you live affect your art?
I was born in regional Victoria; I now live in Brunswick. As I’m no longer in the country, I now appreciate that connection to the bush I took for granted.
