MEET EDWARD TROST

What was the inspiration behind your piece for SWELL Sculpture Festival 2022?
I am attempting to add awareness of mental health illnesses to the public. Creating a sculpture of a head with a hole in it seemed like a good way of expressing it.
What does exhibiting in the 20th year of SWELL Sculpture Festival mean to you?
I am extremely excited to be participating again particularly as I haven’t been able to go to Swell for the past 2 years due to covid. It is one of Australia’s foremost art exhibitions and I look forward to going to it again.
You went to grab your favourite mug, but have found a Genie living inside of it – what are your three wishes?
1. End poverty
2. End war
3. The ability to deliver all of the ideas I have with art
What might people be surprised to learn about you?
I enjoy playing tennis.
Do you think coriander tastes like soap?
No, but I haven’t eaten any herbal soap lately.
What is your favourite song to get the party started?
Don’t stop till you get enough – Michael Jackson
I have just moved all my playlists from Spotify to Apple Music for the better quality.

What is your favourite thing to do after completing a major project?
Probably, sitting back, having a beer and looking at the art and thinking of the next one.
What are some important lessons you’ve learnt from your art career?
There are always people with loads more talent than you.
What excites you about the future of art?
There seems to be an increased awareness to art in society in general. The more that this can happen the more excited I will become.
What is your favourite ‘dad joke’?
I avoid ‘dad jokes’ as they are overrated.
What would we find you doing when you’re not making art?
Playing with my 6 month old puppy.
Where were you born, where are you living now, and how does where you live affect your art?
Ipswich Qld, now living in Wardell NSW.
As I live on a property I can make as much noise creating art as I want. When I lived in the city I was always aware of what the neighbours were thinking.
