MEET COURTENAY MCCUE FROM DISTRICT23

What was the inspiration behind your piece for SWELL Sculpture Festival 2022?

This year our collaborative sculpture is inspired by nostalgic youth with a twist. It is going to be interactive with the public and transforms at night with some fun lighting.

What does exhibiting in the 20th year of SWELL Sculpture Festival mean to you?

We love being a part of SWELL and is such an honour to be exhibiting for the 20 year anniversary of such a fun art festival. We love mingling with all of the other artist and team a part of swell and can’t wait for the morning sunrises.

What is the coolest art tip you’ve ever received?

Art tip or trip?

Is It lonely working as an artist? If so, how do you combat that?

It does get lonely sometimes but that’s a reason why I love to collaborate with other Gold Coast artist. For this SWELL Sculpture it is a collaborative project between Connor, Ed and myself making it a lot more fun.

What does your dream collaboration look like, and which artist/s would you chose?

Mmm a dream collaboration would be with a fashion label. Probably Vivienne Westwood or Dolce & Gabbana.

What is your favourite art supply store of all time?

Does Bunnings count?

If you could have lunch with any artist from any era, who would it be?

Elton john for sure haha.

What is your favourite thing to do after completing a major project?

Definitely a bar or the next day treating myself to a spa day or a day of doing nothing at all.

What is the strangest thing or thought that has inspired a piece of your work, or practice?

A duck.

If you had to pick one artist to create the story of your life through art, who would you pick and why?

Alexander McQueen.

Do you have an artist power outfit that you wear while creating?

Basically all of my clothes are now covered in paint which gets annoying when I’m actually trying to dress up for an event. Even my fancy black leather trench coat has paint on it and I have no idea how that even happened.

Do you believe pineapple belongs on pizza?

Yes. It creates the perfect balance but also some confusion to the taste buds. Who knew fruit could live on a pizza, who came up with that idea anyway?
