MEET IVAN LOVATT

What was the inspiration behind your piece for SWELL Sculpture Festival 2022?

I have a collection of elements that I want to use in my work. I usually have many ideas, but eventually something will float to the top, the things I notice around me and the things people may say often help me to make my decision.

What does exhibiting in the 20th year of SWELL Sculpture Festival mean to you?

Creativity is a kind of scattered and untethered force, It needs discipline direction and deadlines.

Do you think coriander tastes like soap?

Coriander is poison.

What might people be surprised to learn about you?

I am not interested in fame, I simply wish to be able to continue doing the things I love.

Do you have any artist pet peeves? What are they?

How long did it take, you can make a masterpiece in a minute and a complete umass of an entire lifetime.

You went to grab your favourite mug, but have found a Genie living inside of it – what are your three wishes?

I would wish to be Rick the second two options are irrelevant Morty.

Are there any budding artists that you’re excited to see evolve?

i’m excited to see all budding artists evolve.

What is the strangest food combo that you love?

I just eat whatever’s available.

If you have one, what is your spirit animal?

I just eat whatever’s available

Do you have a favourite quote or mantra that you live by?

No everything is changing all the time.

What is your favourite snack when working on big projects?

Because I mainly use chainsaws and heavy power tools I’m covered in protective equipment. I’ve discovered that a n95 dust mask can hold a surprising amount of beef jerky and roasted almonds that you can nibble at your leisure without using your dirty sawdusty hands.

I’m a genius.

Mmmm.. secret snacks.

Does music impact your art? What kind of music do you create to?

I enjoy trying to find the best things that I like in all Types of music.
