Description
Mother and Child was inspired by Giovanni Bellini’s Madonna col Bambino. The strong geometry and simplicity of the composition translated instantly in the artist’s imagination to this series of small works, which are intended to lead to a large scale rendering of the sculpture in the future. The sculpture subject may be interpreted as a version of the classic Christian subject (as the original painting is) however the artist believes it speaks simply of motherhood in whatever form it takes; human, nature, Gaia, or as the viewer’s imagination suggests.

About the Artist
Matthew is an emerging artist who enjoys utilising traditional blacksmithing techniques and practices to create his sculptures, having found his medium of forged steel later in his life. He finds it difficult to explain his influences, stating that they range from observing iron work from the earliest beginnings to contemporary smiths, as well as finding inspiration in nature and also other art forms.
