Here lies the memory of creatures that lived for millions of years and were lost in 2050. Much of the excess heat generated by the last 300 years of fossil fuel emissions was absorbed by the oceans. Corals were subjected to extreme localised temperatures and entered a bright fluorescing survival phase, akin to sunscreen, to protect themselves. The water stayed warm, so the corals bleached. The sea stars were one of the millions of creatures that lived on the world’s reefs, built by the corals to hide and hunt on.
