SWELL Smalls Gallery 2023 Artwork – The Bends
Hailing from Gunditjmara Country in regional Victoria, Madi Whyte works primarily in sculpture and photography. Inspired by their connection to surrounding landscapes, metalworking, and the everyday zeitgeist, Whyte’s practice is concerned with the language of lines, cuts, folds, and muted aesthetics. Recent sculptures tend instead towards more playful aesthetics. Translating minimalist forms like the humble paperclip to large scale steel and copper pieces, Whyte elevates functional objects, speaking to notions of industrial intervention, labour, and force.
