Luke Zwolsman QLD – Unity
What’s your favourite aspect of being an artist?
Being able to be freely creative, work in solitude most of the time, and being able to choose myself when to come out of hiding and play with others the rest of the time.
Do you have a favourite material you like to work with?
Black granite. I like it’s hardness and it’s ability to accept contrasting surface textures.
Would you rather share an Uber with Barbara Hepworth or Cornelia Parker or Antony Gormley?
Neither really. I generally prefer to avoid traveling with people I don’t know. In fact, as I’m a bit of a hermit, I generally prefer to avoid people in general.
If you could meet any artist (from the past or present) who would it be?
Anish Kapoor. I really love the way he is able to capture space.
What are you most excited for about SWELL?
It is one of the occasions that I like to come out of my cave and meet and talk with other artists. It happens from time to time.
If you could go anywhere in the world to be inspired where would you go?
Alaska. but to be clear. most definitely in the summer.
What job did you do before becoming an artist/ or what do you do on top of being an artist?
If I wasn’t an artist I would definitely love to be a physicist. maybe particle physics.”After the laws of physics, everything else is opinion” so the saying goes.
Are you a night owl or early bird?
Neither. Both. It depends on what mischief I’ve been up to the night before.
How have you grown as an artist since you started out?
Well, I’ve been doing everything I can to avoid growing, but I like eating and drinking so it’s not easy.
What’s the WOW factor of your piece?
I don’t think that I can answer this, but I’m interested to know what you think.
How do you think SWELL Sculpture brings art and the local community together?
By making sculpture accessible to all types of people. not just the academic elite stereotype. I believe this stereotype scares many away from art. But everyone can appreciate art and Swell facilitates this wonderfully.
How many SWELL Sculpture Festivals have you been too?
I have participated in 7 previous Swell Sculpture Festivals.
