Simon McVerry QLD – Julara – The Mullet
What’s your favourite aspect of being an artist?
Taking the time to go to my shed and create art work. It opens doors in your thinking – how to balance form, creativity and make-ability. I also enjoy the installation process where you attempt to set your work in its surroundings to best effect.
Do you have a favourite material you like to work with?
Wood – grown and found.
Would you rather share an Uber with Barbara Hepworth or Cornelia Parker or Antony Gormley?
We don’t have Uber in Tuchekoi and also I have never met any of those folks. Generally I am happy to share a ride with anyone given we are going in the same direction.
If you could meet any artist (from the past or present) who would it be?
The Moai stone sculptors of Rapa Nui. I would really like to understand their perspective in creating those pieces and the installation process for getting them in place.
What are you most excited for about SWELL?
Sitting out on my surfboard at Currumbin Alley looking at the sculptural works from the ocean side.
If you could go anywhere in the world to be inspired where would you go?
New Zealand.
Do you like playing music while you work? If so what’s your favourite genre of music to listen to while you work?
Yep – Modern Australiana Folk
Are you a night owl or early bird?
Depends which way the winds blowing.
Do you find making art a therapeutic or chaotic process?
Depends which way the winds blowing.
What’s the WOW factor of your piece?
How is that balanced there like that ?
Red, blue or yellow?
Blue and Yellow makes Green – with a bit more blue makes Aqua.
What drew you to applying for SWELL?
Its been a while so it feels good to put my hat back in the ring.
