ANZAC POPPY PROJECT

/ / Latest News

A very special art installation, to remember the fallen and to honour those in active service, has taken place over the past two years. In 2015 our nation commemorated the ANZAC Centenary and 100 years since Australia’s involvement in the Fromelles and Pozieres battles.

The ANZAC Poppy Project is an art installation on Elephant Rock that flows with 5,000 handmade red poppies to create the Rock of Remembrance.

SWELL Sculpture Festival, artists Lynne Adams & Tony Butler and Currumbin RSL worked with local school students on a creative exchange for the Poppy Art Project.

The Rock of Remembrance serves as an evocative tribute to those fallen and to those still serving at one of the nation’s largest ANZAC Day Dawn Services hosted by Currumbin RSL on April 25th.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Artists Lynne Adams and Tony Butler have for over a decade, been creating vivid floral sculptures from recycled materials, especially recycled plastic bottles predominately to raise awareness of the impacts of consumerism, waste and pollution.

“We are proud to have been chosen to create and workshop a poppy design utilising recycled plastic bottles as part of the ANZAC Centenary commemorations. Our flower creations have often been described as whimsical.” Lynne says in contrast though, “remembering the casualties of war, this poppy installation displays a much more significant and sombre meaning.”

Lynne and Tony’s sculpture from SWELL Sculpture Festival 2009 inspired the Poppy Installation.
