An environmental project has unfolded at Miami State High School with the installation of a striking Pelican sculpture made from marine-grade stainless steel by Gold Coast artist Mike Van Dam. The sculpture sits poised in serene repose with its beak wide open, serving as an elegant guardian designed as both a playful character and a vessel for change.
Initiated by Deputy Principal Jason Cross and commissioned through SWELL Sculpture, this project is inspired by a commitment to addressing plastic bottle waste. Van Dam meticulously shaped the steel frame to capture a Pelican in quiet vigilance, its open beak ready to catch recycled bottles.
Unveiled as both a work of art and a functional emblem of sustainability, the Pelican has become a focal point for engagement. Students, faculty, and visitors can witness the fusion of art and purpose, inspiring mindful actions and reminding the school community that small choices contribute to a larger narrative of environmental responsibility.
