Description
In this miniature bust of Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), her image is reconceptualised by painting the face to red. This work is part of a series of well-known women in history who made a significant contribution to art/literature. Inviting them into a space for a yearned reintegration/healing encourages exploring the psychological and domestic tension of female identities embodied in each other with the connecting colour red. By shifting the perception of trauma and liberation, Elif Sezen explores new/evocative ideas through expanding the possibilities of visual and poetic language in sculpture.

About the Artist
Elif Sezen is a Melbourne-based multidisciplinary artist, bilingual writer and poet. She holds a PhD in Fine Art from Monash University. Her practice evolves through various fields including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, print media, installation, digital media, music, artist’s books and poetry. In her work she speculates upon strategies of self-representation, transcendence, multifaceted integration and healing by poeticising and reconceptualising memory traces emerging from familial / personal / collective trauma, displacement, grief, loss and various existential states of human condition. This explorative process leads her to a restorative and a celebrative notion of self-construction, desire, longing and a sense of homecoming. She has participated in various national and international group and solo exhibitions. Selected solo exhibitions include Counihan Gallery, 2019; MADA Gallery, 2013.
