Description

Concrete geometric shapes explore the axiom “As above, so below.” The steel rods connecting the two monolithic blocks suggest a link and mirroring between heaven and earth, as well as the inner realm of the human psyche reflecting one’s outer life in physical reality. Spheres and circular indentations evoke celestial motifs, symbolising wholeness, balance, and unity.

About the Artist

Sculptural artist Hayden Phoenix, originally from New Zealand, is now based in Australia. With a background in photography, he has worked as a wedding and portrait photographer since 2001. While living in Tokyo in 1997, he developed an interest in minimalism and Brutalist architecture. In 2017, he began experimenting with thin concrete reliefs featuring geometric patterns before shifting to larger monolithic forms. Hayden embraces the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi—the beauty of imperfection. He explains, “I’m always eager to see what ‘imperfections’ emerge as I remove the forms. Like nature, it’s the differences and the appreciation of them that make something unique and inherently beautiful.”
