Description
Just the hint of a cage. Enough to trap any creature, be they animal or human. Wire, walls, bars, gates, ropes, chains, shackles – can cause physical entrapment. But ideas, ideologies, religions, expectations, stereotypes, political persuasions – are more subtle and maybe more dangerous. Wendy has used a discarded lamp frame to suggest the subtle entrapment of a bird, fashioned from largely discarded metal pieces. Broken, abandoned, rusty but still in flight, ready to flee, like many of the oppressed and marginalised people in our society. Hope springs eternal.
Materials Steel, copper, various recycled metal pieces

About the Artist
Wendy has been creating artworks for many years. The magic and colour of stained glass originally captivated her, and then she moved into mosaics, using glass, ceramics and crockery. Now, her preferred materials are metals, preferable discarded, rusty, nails, nuts, washers, screws and things you’d find lying around the floor of any Men’s Shed. Non-ferrous metals like copper and brass add a touch of colour and then there’s a bit of bling from old jewellery. She has participated in various exhibitions, in and around her hometown of Bellingen, at the Liminal Gallery in Geelong, the Brunswick Nature Sculpture Walk and Sculptures at Scratchley in Newcastle. She was thrilled to win the People’s Choice prize at the inaugural SWELL Art Prize in 2024 on the Gold Coast. Her “day job”, working with refugees, has given her an appreciation of how lucky she is to be able to freely pursue her art.
