Burleigh’s eclectic mix of architecture fascinates me: Modern coastal builds, single story homes of the ‘70s-’90s – many now renovated, luxury houses, and the beach shacks… Ah, the beach shacks! They captivate me, not only for the way they contrast today’s muscular, ‘coastal lux’ builds. These nostalgic delights are simple, functional and modest. A weathered aesthetic; frequently made of fibro/asbestos materials and timber, painted in bright, coastal colours. This painting’s texture and vibrancy capture the joy of meandering by Burleigh’s remaining fibroshacks, contemplating their significance in our sense of place.

About the Artist
Karen is an artist and certified coach with a public health and applied research background. Her art explores what it is to be in relationship to each other, to a place and to ourselves. Through mixed-media painting, Karen reflects and amplifies what she experiences and believes is possible in our relationships. With a PhD straddling anthropology and public health, Karen sees the link between arts, culture and health-for-all as both intuitive and evidenced. In California, Karen solo exhibited in the San Mateo County Art Gallery. Her art has also been exhibited at the SWELL Smalls Gallery, Ingleside Gallery, the Drawing Room SF, ArtFluent, Santa Barbara May Day Show, and published in La Raíz Magazine. Her poetry was published in The Doctorate Magazine and is a part of the forthcoming Deadly Poets Society anthology. Karen also runs arts-based workshops that support people to connect with their creativity and intuition.
