Description
With Safe Haven, the artist examines the intersection of protection, fragility, and the potential for a sustainable future. Reclaimed timber, rusted metal, animal bones, and mycelium are combined to create a structure that feels both vulnerable and enduring. The mycelium forms, grown from waste materials, represents future pathways to safety through sustainable innovation. Anchored in the earth’s cycles of decay and renewal, Safe Haven challenges us to rethink how we build environments where shelters are not only physical but ecological—and create resilience grounded in the reimagining of materials.
Materials Reclaimed timber and barbed wire, found animal bones, fungi and sawdust

About the Artist
Michelle Walker is a maker whose work bridges art and science to explore humanity’s relationship with the natural world. With 25+ years in environmental sciences, she is deeply committed in her practice to addressing the big environmental issues we are facing. Her studio – known as the “Art/Nature/Science Lab” – is a space of hands-on experimentation and exploration. A graduate of QCA with a BFA in sculpture (2008) and two science degrees, Michelle’s multifaceted approach merges chemistry, mycology, earth sciences with welding, woodwork and processing her own earth pigments. Her work has gained notable recognition, including the Emerging Artist’s Bursary at the 2024 SWELL Sculpture Festival. Michelle’s unique approach continues to evolve, driven by her willingness to explore new techniques and materials and desire to inspire new ways of relating to nature.
