Description
Water, Vessels, Light is a colony of larger-than-life coral polyps, tiny animals living with photosynthetic algae, that together build coral reefs thanks to their symbiotic relationship. Forms are made by sculpting and carving waste plastic with heat, water and sand. What can we learn from these more-than-human beings, which support complex and diverse ecosystems?

About the Artist
Nadine Schmoll is a Meanjin/Brisbane artist and educator whose interdisciplinary practice spans art and science to explore plant, animal and human interconnections. Her work is grounded in a nature as teacher approach that includes direct observation and research of the natural world. Nadine is interested in how humans can learn from more-than-human beings to create mutually beneficial relationships between ourselves and the world around us. Investigations into symbiotic relationships are expressed through collaborative community projects and sustainable use of waste materials. Nadine has exhibited with Beaudesert Regional Gallery, Logan Art Gallery and Ballarat Regional Council; and undertaken public art commissions for Heritage Lanes, Curiosity Brisbane, Brisbane City Council and Queensland Performing Arts Centre. She was a finalist in the 2024 Emerging Art Prize with fortyfivedownstairs gallery, and was awarded a Regional Arts Development Fund grant and First Prize in the Remagine Art Prize.
